@Herd_Tennis Impresses in Doubles on Day 1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.--Marshall tennis began its 2014 fall campaign at the Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. The Herd picked up two doubles victories and a single win during the opening day of play.
The tournament features a team style of play, which saw the Herd facing William & Mary, Dartmouth, and Virginia.
"We did really well in the doubles, taking two-of-three from William & Mary in their home tournament," head coach John Mercer said. "We competed hard, it's just a matter of shaking off some of the rust from the start of the season. But, I'm really happy with the effort and the ability we displayed. I'm very excited for the season ahead."
Sophomore Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and freshman Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) paired together in the first matchup of the day, falling 8-1 against Loomans/Thaler of William & Mary.
The Herd bounced back, with veteran duo Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) picking up an 8-4 win over the Tribe's Casselbury/Nemchinov. The senior and sophomore pairing has now won 12 of its last 17.
Newcomer Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and sophomore Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) also picked up an 8-4 victory over William & Mary.
In singles action, sophomore Anne Gulsrud (Stavenger, Norway) added to the Herd's success, defeating the Tribe's Jackie Lee 8-1. Marshall fell in the rest of its single matches, facing competitors from both Dartmouth and Virginia.
Bogicevic put up an impressive fight against the Cavaliers' nationally ranked Maci Epstein, falling 2-6, 6-4, 4-6. Broomfield also battled, falling to Dartmouth's Akiko Okuda 1-6, 7-6 (4), 2-6. Freshman Silver also performed well in her first collegiate event, facing nationally ranked Marie Faure of UVA, falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Marshall returns to action tomorrow, facing the teams of Indiana, Maryland, and Penn.
