WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- Marshall tennis continued its inaugural play of the 2014 season on Saturday, earning four singles victories and two doubles wins in the Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.

"We went in there and did a great job taking four of the six against Maryland," head coach John Mercer said. "We lost those other two in close sets too; we did a really great job in singles. How we competed is just preparation for the spring."

"In our doubles matches," Mercer continued, "we're just trying a lot of different combinations and we just have some work to do, but that's to be expected when you're building new teams. But we did great in singles, and we'll get there in doubles."

In doubles play, Marshall faced Indiana and Penn. Freshman Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) picked up her first collegiate win with a doubles victory, and fellow newcomer Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) earned her first singles win after gaining her first doubles 'W' on Friday.

Bogicevic and partner Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) defeated Indiana's Gutierrez/Schmider 8-5, while Silver partnered with sophomore Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) to defeat Penn's Ion/Berkman 8-4.

The veteran duo of senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and sophomore Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) fell in both their matches, taking a tough 8-7 loss to the Hoosiers' Chupa/Klyczek and falling 8-3 to Penn competitors.

The Herd excelled in singles action, picking up four of six wins against Maryland.

Turhan started the trend, defeating the Terrapins' Stanova 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Pomyatinskaya continued the trend, gaining the 6-1, 7-5 victory over Luus.

Silver battled in her match, but came away with the win after defeating O. Bredikhina 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Morales added to the win column, coming from behind after a 5-7 set loss to defeat 6-1, 6-1.

The Herd will conclude the Tribe Invitational with one round of singles matches on Sunday.
