ATHENS, OH- The Marshall softball team earned a 9-7 win against the Ohio Bobcats Sunday in Athens, OH, improving the team's fall record to 3-0 in the final fall road game.
AGAINST THE BOBCATS
Marshall led 2-1 for most of the game, before scoring seven in the 7th inning and then surviving a ferocious comeback that saw Ohio score six runs in the bottom of the 7th
. The Herd was led by Raquel Escareno, who hit 4-4 with 4 RBI. Taylor McCord (2) and Morgan Kelley also drove in runs for the Herd.
Morgan Zerkle hit 2-4 with a run in the game. Shaelynn Braxton (2), Elicia D'Orazio (2), Katalin Lucas, Alyssa Woodrum, Kylie Howard and Alexandria Dawes also scored runs for the Herd.
After a lengthy rain delay, starting pitcher Marissa Bethke was replaced by Brittanie Fowler, who pitched a total of 10.2 innings over the course of the weekend. Fowler would earn the win for the Herd.
STANTON'S STATEMENTS
Head Coach
Shonda Stantonon Raquel Escareno: "Raquel is someone who last year had 40 RBI and is key at the heart of the order for us, getting hits and driving in runs. She came up clutch today and even hit a nice bases clearing double when the game was tight. That was great to see from her." Stanton on team depth: "It's going to be an exciting group to coach because we have so much depth and can really do some things offensively. Today we had help from a few pinch hitters as well, like Taylor McCord, Morgan Kelley and Alyssa Woodrum. When the team is putting up seven or nine runs a game, you have to love that offensive production. Taylor also really played well in the field, which is exciting for us." Stanton on Play of Brittanie Fowler: "I am so proud of the way Brittanie competed. We only have one other pitcher right now and she was able to battle after pitching that no-hitter yesterday and win after pitching a lot of innings."
