SAN ANTONIO - Junior guard Norrisha Victrum (Columbia, S.C.) led Marshall women's basketball (11-6, 3-3) offensively for the second consecutive game with 14 points, but the Thundering Herd could not drum up a second-half comeback and fell, 60-48, at UTSA (8-10, 3-3) on Thursday at the Convocation Center.
Marshall began the contest on a 5-0 run after reigning C-USA Player of the Week Leah Scott (Detroit) converted an old-fashioned 3-point play and Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.) contributed a layup. The Herd climbed to an 11-5 lead before a 10-4 UTSA run erased the Roadrunners' deficit, resulting in a 15-15 tie. After Marshall re-gained a 17-15 lead, a 6-0 run gave UTSA a 21-17 advantage with 6:12 before halftime. The Herd responded with a 5-0 run to go back up 22-21, and the teams would trade leads thrice more before halftime. Victrum drained a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining in the half to put Marshall within one, down 30-29.
Prior to the game, the Herd was 1-5 on the year when trailing at the half, claiming its lone comeback at Norfolk State on Dec. 16, 73-71.
One minute and fifteen seconds into the second half, the game saw its fourth tie at 32-32. From that point, the Roadrunners exploded on an 11-0 run over 3:27 for its largest margin up to that instance, up 43-32 at 13:46. Three minutes later, four consecutive points by Victrum put the Herd within seven, 45-38, but UTSA answered with four points to re-gain an 11-point lead of 49-48 with 8:55 to play.
Marshall went down by 11 again at 2:24, and found itself in its biggest hole of 12 points with 1:40 remaining. The game ended with UTSA on top, 60-48.
The Roadrunners handily out-rebounded Marshall, 50-25, and produced 15 second-chance points off 31 offensive boards. Marshall's 48 points, 25 rebounds and 18 field goals were all season lows. Scott had 11 points to follow Victrum's 14, and AJ Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) had eight. Ezeigbo, who leads the nation in field goal percentage (.685), posted seven points on 3-of-4 (.750) from the field and grabbed eight rebounds.
