LOS ANGELES - Marshall tennis (1-2) suffered its second loss of the season falling to No. 74 UC Irvine (2-1) 4-1 Sunday, Jan. 25, to conclude the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Sophomore Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) was the only Marshall player to go 2-0 on the day.
Doubles play proved just how easy the new "no-ad scoring format" can affect match outcomes.
Pomyatinskaya and partner Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) secured a win at the No. 1 spot (6-3). Senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and freshman Maija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) lost 6-0 the No. 2 spot. With the doubles point on the line, Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) lost a 40-40 point at 4-5 for the third doubles loss, succumbing the doubles point.
Singles play was no less of a fight. Pomytinskya pulled out a straight-set win at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 7-5. Broomfield battled close at the No. 3 spot, but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-4.
No. 116 Turhan went point-for-point at the No. 1 spot, but lost in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-1). Freshman Cristina Kaiser (Philadelphia, Pa.) made her collegiate debut at the No. 6 spot, but fell in straight sets. Silver (No. 2 spot) and Morales (No. 5 spot) were both left on the court in the middle of their third sets.
The Herd will have a week off to regroup before welcoming two teams from the Bluegrass State (University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky) to Huntington for a double-header Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Huntington Tennis Club. Play will begin at 10am against the Wildcats, followed by a 5pm start against the Colonels.
QUOTES BY COACH John Mercer
"Our inexperience ultimately showed today. We had our share of chances on every court, but we just could not seem to make them connect."
"Being so young, it is important for us to take as much as we can from every match. It is important for us to learn each time we are on the court, and hopefully we will be able to learn a lot from today and move forward."
"We will use our time off before the next couple matches to regroup and work on what we need to do to be better, both physically and mentally."
