HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University swimming and diving upset the University of Cincinnati tonight in dual meet competition. The final score was 126-117 in a meet that came down to the last relay, winner take all. Marshal also defeated VMI by a score of 125 - 20.
Cincinnati came out and won the first three events, jumping out to a 39-16 lead. Marshall fought back with a 1-2 finish in both the 50 Freestyle and the 400 IM. Gloriya Mavrova won the 50 Free in 24.14 and Caroline Wanner won the 400 IM in a pool record time of 4:25.76.
The Herd then got their divers involved. Megan Wolons won 3 Meter Diving and Kelly Toner was tops in 1 Meter.
Coming out of the diving break, Marshall blitzed to a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 Fly with Freshman Maddie Schaffer leading the way in 2:06.04. Cincinnati fought back with wins in the next 4 events to close the gap to 4 points headed into the final event. However, the Thundering Herd's 400 Freestyle Relay was too much for the Bearcats. Lauren Cowher, Maggie Stovall, Gloriya Mavrova and Chloe Parsemain distanced the top Cincinnati relay by over a second to take the relay win and the meet win.
"I live for close meets like tonight," Herd coach Bill Tramel said. "This was a total team win which makes it even more special. We had some great dives and swims tonight and I'm really proud of the fight everyone showed. We won almost every close touch at the finish tonight. I don't think there is anything more satisfying than teaching our athletes a skill, and then watching them execute it and having it work. I really enjoy watching this sport done well."
"We had so many individual performances tonight it's really hard to single anyone out because, again, this was a team effort tonight. I do need to mention Caroline Wanner breaking the Fitch Natatorium pool record in the 400 IM. I also want to congratulate our staff, Andrew Helmich, Ian Walsh, and Kacey Preun for a great job tonight."ââ'¬â€¹
