Marshall assistant coach Thomas Olivier

On the emotional roller coaster of the match

"It was tough, exciting. We knew Charlotte would come out strong. They're a good side, they're well-coached, and they're at home. We wanted to manage the fluctuations in the game; we didn't want it to be a big roller coaster. We wanted it to be a small roller coaster. We knew there would be peaks and valleys, but we wanted to make sure we won the peaks and the valleys. We were kind of prepared for this game, but it got kind of exciting there for a while."

On the play of the defense to push the game to penalty kicks

"They definitely had a lot of quality shots; I don't know if 28 is the right number. Sometimes those numbers are flawed, but certainly if you said it was 18, I'd probably buy it. [Goalkeeper] Dominik [Reining] is good. We have faith in him; we talked about it today, we talked about it all week. We want him to make two or three big saves, but he outdid himself and made five -- so we'll take those for sure."

On playing through the Charlotte home crowd

"We thrive with adversity. We are good with adversity. We had our backs against the wall for the past two weeks; we need results against New Mexico, UAB and at Old Dominion and we played our best soccer. I don't think we can argue that we played our best soccer tonight, but we move on and we have to learn from the game. I think the guys did well in buying into what we want wanted to do, and we had a good week of preparation. We had two good days down here."

On the Charlotte's penalty kick that hit the crossbar

"That was Coach Alex [Fatovic] called it that on the fourth shooter Dom would make a save. We'll take the bar instead, but he said that on the four, that would be our swing kick. We were going to let Romario [Gordon] take us home -- and that's how it worked out. It's unfortunate because that's how soccer works; it's a fickle cruel game and we are happy to be on the right end."

Marshall sophomore goalkeeper Dominik Reining

On the Marshall defensive effort

"I think it's not only the defenders; it starts with the strikers and all 11 men on the field just did a tremendous job and gave everything we had. One shot was saved on the line when I got beat and I am happy with my performance and helped to get the win."
