HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's basketball announced the signing of Ashley Saintigene (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) and Asheika Alexander (Gwinnett, Ga.) for the 2016-17 season on Tuesday.
"Our staff has once again done an amazing job recruiting the right fit and using the relationships we have all over the country, has turned in another outstanding class," Herd coach Matt Daniel said in announcing the new class.
Saintigene has been a dominant force for Northeast High School in Oakland Park, Fla. The 6-foot-2 forward is averaging almost a double-double every game through her junior year with 14.2 ppg and 9.3 rpg. She adds almost two blocks per game as well and was named to the 7A All-State second team last season.
"Ashley is a versatile forward with a great feel for the game and a space eating wing span," Coach Daniel said. "She has been well-coached and is extremely tough and competitive. We are happy to have her in our family.
"A recruiting service just released that she (Saintigene) was one of the top three prospects in south Florida, which is quite the accomplishment, given the talent that comes out of that state every year."
Alexander is a tall, athletic guard from South Gwinnett High School in Snellville, Ga. Alexander is averaging 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game.
"Asheika is a positionless guard," Coach Daniel said. "She can shoot it, drive it, pass it and guard it. Her versatility will be a huge asset.
"She was recruited at a high, high level. Her mom said she met two head coaches throughout the process, myself and Dawn Staley (South Carolina coach). Asheika also plays on the AAU circuit for a former player of mine at Missouri, LaToya Bond.
"We have also received a commitment from a 6-foot-4 transfer who will sit out starting the second semester and be ready to go next December. We anticipate these three additions will continue what has been established as being great ambassadors for our program and the university."
These players follow a freshman class for the 2015-16 season that was rated the No. 52 recruiting class in the country.
Next up for the Herd is a home match with the Rhode Island Rams on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
