HAVE YOU HERD?
Junior forward Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis) led Marshall to its third consecutive victory with a career-high 27 points as the Thundering Herd defeated MEAC favorite North Carolina Central, 92-73, on Monday night at Cam Henderson Center. Marshall shot a season-best 54.4 percent from the floor (37-of-68) and turned the ball over just nine times. Taylor converted 10-of-12 from the field and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the line with three rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

TAYLOR-MADE
Taylor is just seven points away from becoming the 50th 1,000-point scorer in school history. He has 993 points over 72 games at Marshall. The Herd's 49 all-time 1,000-point scorers are tied for 19th among Division I programs.

BURKS EARNS SECOND C-USA WEEKLY HONOR
Redshirt freshman guard C.J. Burks (Martinsburg, W.Va.) was named Conference USA Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday. Burks averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game as the Herd snapped its six-game losing streak with back-to-back home wins last week. The guard came off the bench against Eastern Illinois (Dec. 9) and recorded career highs of 39 minutes, five rebounds and three steals. He earned the fourth start of his career in the following game against Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 12), and produced 14 points, four assists, three rebounds and zero turnovers.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
No. 20/16 West Virginia (8-1) enters the 44th Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic following a 100-58 thrashing of Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday in Morgantown. Five Moutaineers reached double-figure scoring, led by Jevon Carter's 21 points. Devin Williams had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. The junior foward leads WVU with 17.0 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.

The Mountaineers have yet to play a true road game, at 5-0 on their home court and 3-1 at neutral sites. WVU's only loss is to then-No. 10 Virginia on Dec. 8, 70-54, at the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic has been on an annual basis at a neutral site since the 1991-92 season. West Virginia has claimed the last four meetings and leads overall, 32-11. The Herd's last win in the series was against a 21st-ranked WVU team on Jan. 19, 2011. Last season, the 22nd-ranked Mountaineers edged Marshall, 69-66, on Dec. 14, 2014. The Herd has faced AP-ranked WVU seven times, and is 2-5 in those meetings.
