HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Catherine Bendziewicz of Chapin, S.C., has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Marshall University swimming and diving team, coach Bill Tramel announced today.
Bendziewicz is a two-time South Carolina high school state champion in the 50 and 100 freestyle. She is coached by Heath Edwards at Palmetto Aqautics in Columbia, S.C.. Her sister-in-law, Megan Demeter, swam for Marshall from 2008-11.
"We are very happy on so many levels with Catherine's decision to join us next fall," Tramel said. "Not only is she a talented athlete, but she is smart and also a first-class person. She is family of an alum and swims for one of my former swimmers. Heath (Edwards) was a freshman butterflier when I was an assistant coach at the University of Georgia."
Bendziewicz brings lifetime best times of 23.80 in the 50 freestyle, 52.19 in the 100 freestyle and 1:06.44 in the 100 breaststroke.
"I'm so excited for this new experience to come," Bendziewicz said. "The team seems hard-working and welcoming, led by great coaches with motivation to make an unstoppable team in the up-and-coming years. I can't wait to see what the future holds and where it leads me."
"In our quest to build a champion program at Marshall University, we continue to target people who understand what it takes to win," Tramel said. "Catherine is the next high school state champion to join our program and her coach was a champion as well. Catherine fits fantastic with our team."
