HAVE YOU HERD?
Junior guard Stevie Browning (Logan, W.Va.) matched career-highs of 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Marshall in a 75-65 loss to Akron on Friday night at Cam Henderson Center. Senior forward James Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich.) joined Browning with a team-high 18 points and added seven rebounds. Junior forward Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis) rounded out double-figure scoring for the Herd with 17 points, and had seven rebounds. For the Zips, senior center Pat Forsythe had team highs of 20 points and eight rebounds and shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the field in 27 minutes.
STIFF COMPETITION
Marshall's non-conference schedule features some impressive competition. The Herd's first five opponents have a combined 25-12 (.676) record so far in 2015-16. The Herd faces James Madison, picked second in the Preseason CAA poll, in a home-and-home series (Nov. 27, Dec. 6). Akron, predicted to win the MAC East Division, visited the Herd on Dec. 4. Additionally, Marshall will take on defending Mountain West Conference tournament champion Wyoming at the Global Sports Classic in Las Vegas on Dec. 21.
SCOUTING THE DUKES
James Madison (6-3) rides a four-game win streak into Sunday's meeting with the Herd. Last time out, the Dukes used a second-half comeback to defeat Western Michigan, 63-57, on Thursday night at the JMU Convocation Center. The Dukes are 3-2 at home this season, dropping games to Oral Roberts (Nov. 21) and UT Martin (Nov. 22) during the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic.
Three Dukes average 11 points or more, with Ron Curry (13.6 ppg) pacing the squad. Shakir Brown follows Curry with 13.3 points per outing, and contributes a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game.
Although the Herd outscored the Dukes 52-43 in the second half, it wasn't enough as Marshall fell 89-75 in its home opener to JMU at Cam Henderson Center, nine days ago. The teams played an identical home-and-home series during the 2010-11 season, splitting the two games with each squad winning on their home court. After the first matchup, a 67-63 victory for the Herd in Huntington on Dec. 7, 2010, the teams met just two weeks later in the JMU Convocation Center on Dec. 22. The Dukes won that contest, 80-73.
