HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's soccer coach Kevin Long has announced the addition of three freshmen who have joined the Thundering Herd.
Jayne Lawman (Winfield, W.Va.), Ashley Seltzer (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Shontelle Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) signed and enrolled at Marshall in January.
"We are very excited for all of our 2015 high school graduates," Long said. "The three that have come in January are doing very well. They are working hard and I am eager to get the spring under their belt so they can hit next fall running."
Lawman, a 5-foot-8 midfielder/forward from Winfield High School, recently earned her second consecutive Gatorade West Virginia Girls Soccer Player of the Year honor. In addition to being the first student-athlete to earn the award twice, she is the first recipient to join the Thundering Herd. This past season, she led the Generals to a 22-0-3 record and a third straight Class AAA state championship. Lawman scored 27 goals and passed for 15 assists, including two goals in the state semifinals and an assist on the game-winning score in a 2-1 victory over Washington High in the state final. The 2014 West Virginia High School Soccer Coaches Association Class AAA Forward of the Year, Lawman was also the 2013 WVHSSCA Class AAA Player of the Year. She concluded her prep soccer career with 101 goals.
Seltzer scored 71 goals and made 46 assists in two and half years played at Bearden High School. The 5-5 forward was named team MVP and earned the Coach's Award as a senior. She is a two-time first team all-state honoree, and was named an all-state Sports Writers Association selection twice. She is a three-time member of first team all-district, all-region, all-KIL (Knoxville) and PrepXtra (newspaper). A two-time district Forward of the Year, she earned a spot on the All-America Watch List. In addition to being named Most Athletic at Bearden, she was a member of the National Honor Society and Annual Staff.
Smith was voted St. Hilda's Collegiate Most Valuable Player twice and captained as a senior. In 2014, she was the top goal scorer of Football South Premier Women, and was the Football South Young Player of the Year in 2013. The 5-5 midfielder played for New Zealand Secondary School Girls as well as the NZ U17 Wilder Squad. In the NZ U17 club championships, she acted as team captain and scored the only goal in the final for Dunedin.
"All three are very athletic, creative and dangerous soccer players and extremely hard workers," Long added. "I am excited to watch them grow over the coming years."
