Winning Streak Snapped for @Herd_Tennis Sunday

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- No. 73 Marshall tennis (6-3) ended its winning streak after a 6-1 loss to No. 50 Virginia Tech (6-2) Sunday, Feb. 22 in Blacksburg, Va. Prior to the loss, the Herd had won five in a row.
The Hokies were able to snatch all three doubles wins to start the day. Sophomore duo Derya Turhan ( Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) lost a tough 8-2 match on court 1 to No. 36 ranked Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita.
Rachael Morales ( Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Maddie Silver ( Grand Rapids, Mich.) fell 8-5 on court 3 and Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and Marija Bogicevic ( Belgrade, Serbia) also fell 8-5 on court 2.
Singles play featured three three-set battles, only one of them ending in favor for the Herd.
Bogicevec dropped a tough 6-1, 6-1 loss on court 5, followed by Pomyatinskaya's 6-2, 6-0 loss on court 3. The Hokie's fourth win came on court 2 against Silver (6-3, 6-2).
Turhan and Broomfield both combated three-set matches on courts 1 and 4, but ultimately fell (Turhan 6-1, 6-7, 10-6, and Broomfield 4-6, 6-0, 7-5).
Morales posted the sole win for her team with a three-set win on court 6 (5-7, 6-2, 10-8).
Next, Marshall returns home to take on Penn State Saturday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m. at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville, W. Va. The Herd will also play No. 48 Utah Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at home.
