COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Marshall University softball team moved to 13-4 on Saturday, after defeating Charleston Southern 6-1 and losing to SEC school (RV) South Carolina 2-0 at the Carolina Classic in Columbia.
AGAINST THE BUCCANEERS
Marshall got started in the second thanks to junior Shaelynn Braxton. After walking, she advanced to second on a throwing error. She then scored after a strong single to center by junior Katalin Lucas. Lucas then scored after sophomore Rebecca Myslenski showed patience at the plate and was walked with the bases loaded. Sophomore Morgan Zerkle then continued her fine form and hit a two RBI single through the middle, scoring freshman Kylie Howard and Braxton.
In the fifth, Zerkle was able to single again and later scored on a throwing error. The Herd rounded out the game with a sixth inning run from freshman Madi Marshall, who pinch-ran for senior Kristina Braxton after Braxton singled. Junior Kaelynn Greene brought Marshall home after an infield single to make the score 6-1.
Sophomore pitcher Jordan Dixon got the win to move to 12-3. During the game, Dixon threw six strikeouts, which helped her to surpass Natasha Johnson (366) for fifth place in Marshall history for career strikeouts. After both of Saturday's games, Dixon now has 380 strikeouts.
AGAINST THE (RV) GAMECOCKS
Marshall held its own against South Carolina, a team that was the second highest among non-ranked schools receiving votes in this week's USA Softball/NFCA polls.
Marshall allowed only two runs, after Alaynie scored from a triple and wild pitch and another run came in from a home run by Jordan Bizzell.
Dixon stepped into the circle again, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts and only one walk.
South Carolina got a strong performance from its pitcher, Nickie Blue. Blue threw a two-hit shutout, with 12 strikeouts on the day.
