Herd Hosts Pair of Matches this Weekend

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- No. 74 Marshall tennis (9-4) will welcome two opponents at home this weekend at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville, W. Va.
First, Marshall will take on Miami of Ohio (5-5) Friday at 4 p.m. Last season, the Herd trampled the RedHawks 6-1 on their homecourt.
The Herd will then look to gain bragging rights over Winthrop (6-7) Sunday at 10 a.m. Last year, the Herd fell to Winthrop 4-3.
Miami and Winthrop will also face each other Saturday at 1. That will be the first meeting between the two schools.

After a 2-0 weekend with wins over Cincinnati and West Virginia, the Herd remained ranked in the latest ITA rankings.
Sophomore Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) leads the team in singles wins (10-3).
Freshman Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) has won eight of her last ten matches at number 2 singles.
Lone senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) is on a three-match winning streak at the No. 4 spot.
Scouting the RedHawks
Miami of Ohio is 5-5, winning its last three contests including a 5-2 ranked win over #71 Wisconsin.
The No. 1 pair of Christine Guerazzi and Nelli Ponomareva hold a 3-7 record, and Alix Thurman is on a three-match winning streak at the No. 1 singles spot.
Scouting the Eagles
Winthrop is currently 6-7 but will play two more matches before they face the Herd (VCU and Miami of Ohio).
In doubles, Alice Garcia and Mariana Humberg hold a 13-3 record at the No. 1 spot.
Ekin Gunaysu and Alice Garcia have been flipping between the 1 and 2 spot. This spring, Gunaysu holds a 7-6 record and Garcia sports a 6-7 record.
