HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The weather didn't rain on the Herd's parade as No. 74 Marshall tennis (10-4) defeated Miami of Ohio (5-6) 4-3 Friday at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville, W. Va.
The Herd came back from a 0-3 deficit, capturing four straight singles matches to win the match.
Sophomore duo Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) captured the first win of the day at the No. 1 spot (8-6). After sophomore Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and freshman Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) lost a tough 8-6 match at the No. 3 spot, the tiebreaker on court 2 decided the doubles point.
Senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and freshman Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) ultimately fell 8-7(2).
With Miami leading 1-0 going into singles play, the Herd was in for a battle.
The Redhawks snatched the first two singles wins, first from Pomyatinskaya (7-6(2), 6-0) on court three, and then from Silver (6-1, 6-2) on court 2. Silver's loss was just her fourth of the season.
With Miami leading the Herd 3-0, Broomfield answered with a three-set (6-0, 1-6, 6-3) win at the No. 4 spot, continuing her four-match winning streak.
Bogicevic soon followed suit with a 6-2, 7-5 win on court 5, narrowing the Redhawks lead to 3-2.
Turhan then evened the score with a three set nail biter (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) at the No. 1 spot.
The final match sat on the shoulders of Morales for the third time this season. After being down a set and 1-3, she triumphed with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.
Next, the Herd will look to regain bragging rights over Winthrop (6-8) Sunday at 10 a.m. Last year, the Herd fell to Winthrop 4-3.
QUOTES FROM COACH John Mercer:
"It was really great to see such a competitive spirit today. Winning four singles matches is not easy. Winning four singles matches down 0-3 is even tougher.I was really proud of our singles play. Derya [Turhan] and Rachael [Morales] did a great job pulling out their matches after being down. Kai competes great and I was really proud of Marija for pulling out her match."
"As for the doubles, you can't win them all. Sunday will be better."
