Tennis Falls 4-3 to FIU

MIAMI-- No. 74 Marshall tennis (11-7) lost a tough 4-3 battle to  Conference USA rival FIU (9-6) Saturday at the FIU Tennis Courts in Miami.
Due to an injured player, FIU played with five players. Two doubles matches and five singles matches determined the outcome of the match.
Strong doubles play helped the Herd take an early lead. Sophomore duo Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) captured a swift 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. The Herd secured the 1-0 lead when senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and sophomore Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) teamed up for the first time this spring and captured a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
The No. 3 match was awarded to the Herd by a walkover.
Singles action started in the Herd's favor after they went up 2-0 with win by walkover at the No. 6 spot.
Turhan and Pomyatinskaya were unlucky at spots 1 and 2, Turhan losing 6-1, 6-2, and Pomyatinskaya losing 6-4, 6-2 respectively.
Morales then came through with a straight set win (6-2, 6-2) at the number 5 spot, putting the Herd up 3-2.
In a fight for the fourth win and with two matches remaining, Silver ultimately fell 6-2, 6-4. FIU then snatched the deciding win from Broomfield in a grueling three-set battle (1-6, 7-5, 6-4).
Up next, the Herd will face Florida Atlantic (12-4) Sunday, March 29 at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton, Florida. Play will begin at 2 p.m. ET.
