GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Marshall University softball team (21-10) picked up the weekend sweep of the Furman Paladins (15-16) at Pepsi Stadium in Greenville on Sunday.
The Herd allowed only one run for the weekend, behind three wins from pitcher Jordan Dixon.
AGAINST THE PALADINS
The Herd and Paladins went until the top of the third until a run was scored. Marshall junior Kaelynn Greene singled on a well-placed bunt to her left-hand side. The next batter, freshman Elicia D'Orazio, then tripled to deep right center, bringing Greene all the way around from first to give Marshall the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Marshall brought across another run. With the bases loaded, junior Shaelynn Braxton batted in Greene from third with a grounder to short. The junior was out on the play, but got her 33rd RBI of the season.
Furman would add its first run of the weekend in the bottom of the fifth after an RBI double by Ambree Muller made the score 2-1. Â The Herd would go on to hold onto the lead from there.
Marshall sophomore Jordan Dixon got the win, allowing just four hits and one earned run on the weekend. Dixon had seven strikeouts and had 26 for the weekend. Dixon's win was her 20th this year, equaling last season's win total with 22 regular season games remaining.
STANTON'S STATEMENTS
Coach Shonda Stanton on Furman Sweep:
"Elicia and KG (Greene) did a great job today. We switched it up a bit and moved them to the eight and nine spots and it paid off with the RBI. Shaelynn Braxton did a good job as well, getting KG home."
"We had another great performance from Jordan Dixon today. She had a strong weekend as well, getting all three wins and 26 strikeouts."
"It was really nice to get the sweep as well. We have two games to get ready for on Tuesday against Wright State and then we get back into Conference USA play on Saturday against a very strong North Texas team. We hope to carry plenty of momentum back into conference play."
