HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- A Morgan Zerkle walk off double in game one (3-2) and a run rule performance in game two (11-2) gave Marshall softball (23-10, 4-5) two victories in Tuesday's double header against Wright State (7-23) at Dot Hicks Field Tuesday.
GAME ONE
Marshall got started in the first when junior Shaelynn Braxton connected with a pitch and sent it deep to center field for a sacrifice fly, which scored junior Kaelynn Greene.
In the fourth, Marshall added another run, when freshman Elicia D'Orazio also drove in a run through a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home junior Katalin Lucas.
Wright State got back in the game in the top of the fifth after a home run by Gorman tied the contest at two.
Things would remain scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when sophomore Morgan Zerkle hit an RBI walk off double to score D'Orazio and win the game for the Herd, 3-2.
Sophomore pitcher Jordan Dixon got the win for the Herd, recording 10 strikeouts to improve to 21-10 this season, her new career high in wins, surpassing last season's 20 win season.
GAME TWO
Junior Brittanie Fowler got the start in game two and Wright State was immediately able to score two runs. Fowler and the Herd defense were able to rally from there and did not allow another run for the remainder of the game.
Marshall ended the game in the top of the fifth after an 11-2 run rule victory. Lucas hit a three run home run and finished the day with three RBIs. Freshman Jordan Colliflower collected the first two hits of her career in a 2-3 day and added two runs.
Braxton added three RBI as well for the Herd, while Zerkle, freshman Taylor McCord, junior Raquel Escareno and junior Alyssa Woodrum also batted in runs for Marshall.
Fowler earned the win, allowing only four hits and throwing two strikeouts. She is now 2-0 this season.
