MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Marshall tennis trumped in-state rival West Virginia Sunday with a 5-2 victory in Morgantown, W.Va. The win marks the second consecutive year the Herd has defeated the Mountaineers and the ninth win in the last 10 years.

In doubles, sophomore duo Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) took care of business 6-2 at the number one spot.

Sophomore Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and freshman and Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) followed suit with a 6-3 win at the number three spot, leaving the tandem of Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and Marija Bogicevic on court two unfinished at 4-5.

Four courts at the Ridgeview Racquet Club made for a long day of singles play.

Broomfield captured the first singles win for the Herd at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 6-2). Pomyatinskaya continued her winning ways with a 7-5, 6-2 win on court three.

Turhan fell in a close 6-4, 6-4 contest at the No. 1 spot, but the Herd was able to hang on when the win was made official when Silver captured a 6-1, 7-6 win at the number 2 spot.

The Mountaineers were able to snatch another point at the number five spot over Bogicevic (6-2, 6-3).

Morales ended the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the number 6 spot to solidify the match. The sophomore improves to a 7-2 singles record.

Marshall will next return home against Miami of Ohio Friday, March 13 at 4 p.m., and Winthrop Sunday, March 15 at 10 a.m. The matches could be the Herd's first of the season at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center outdoor courts on campus, weather pending.
