No. 48 Marshall Suffers Sweep By No. 71 ODU

NORFOLK, Va. -- In a match up held on No. 71 Old Dominion's senior day, No. 48 Marshall tennis took a tough 7-0 loss to the Monarchs Friday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va.
It was the first time the Monarchs have defeated the Herd since 2008, and the Herd's first 7-0 loss of the season.
The Monarchs took an early lead by securing the doubles point with wins over Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) 8-4 on court 2 and Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) 8-5 on court 3. Sophomore duo Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) were able to pull out an 8-4 win on court 1.
Singles play was no less of a battle. ODU improved the score to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Silver on court 2. Pomyatinskaya was next to finish, dropping a tough 6-0, 7-6 match on court 3.
The match was secured when ODU stole its fourth win on court 6 over Bogicevic (6-2, 6-4).
With the match already decided, the three remaining positions all battled in third-set contests.
Although Morales won the first set on court 5, the following two sets would land in favor of ODU (1-6, 6-2, 6-2).
Turhan played some impressive tennis on court 1, going neck and neck with nationally ranked No. 98 Borislava Botusharova. She ultimately fell in the third set tiebreaker.
Broomfield was last to finish, falling in a tight 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 match on court 4.
Up next, the Herd will now head to Richmond to face VCU (12-8) Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. A victory over VCU would be the first win over the Rams in Marshall tennis history.
