HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall softball (31-11, 10-6 Conference USA) will take its longest road trip of the season this weekend as it takes on UTEP (13-32, 8-10 C-USA) in El Paso, Texas.
HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall surpassed its single season record for stolen bases in the second game against Northern Kentucky. The team now has 141 on the season, which surpasses the 137 mark set in 2004.
Marshall sophomore center fielder Morgan Zerkle is closing in on Marshall's single-season record for hits. Zerkle has 80 this season and needs just one to tie the single-season record set by junior Kaelynn Greene last season. Zerkle joined Greene as the only Marshall players to collect more than 80 hits in a season. Zerkle is also at 44 stolen bases. She needs four to equal her single-season record of 48 last year. Greene and Zerkle are the only players in Herd history with 80 or more hits in a season.
Marshall sophomore pitcher Jordan Dixon has 29 wins. She would need four in the remaining eight games to tie the single season record that Andi Williamson set in 2013.
Marshall is also No. 41 in this week's NCAA Division I RPI rating. That is the third highest ranking in Conference USA, behind No. 31 Western Kentucky and FAU, which is No. 36.
SCOUTING THE MINERS
UTEP is 13-32 (8-10 C-USA) and was just recently swept by UTSA. The Miners also recently swept FIU in El Paso. UTEP is 10-3 at home this season, but 0-16 away.
Kawehiokalani Netane leads the Miners with a .394 average and has a team leading eight home runs and 52 hits.
The leading pitcher is Kaitlin Fifield, who is 9-14. Marshall is 19-9 against UTEP, with the last meeting coming in 2013.
