HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- There was much to celebrate on Kai Broomfield's (Toronto, Canada) senior day as Marshall tennis trumped No. 38 DePaul (12-4) Friday, April 3 at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville, W. Va.
The win improved the Herd's record to 13-7, and was the team's highest ranked win this season.
Competitive doubles in the new six-game/no ad scoring format set the tone for the day. Broomfield and partner Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) were first to succeed, capturing a 6-4 win at the number 2 spot.
The Blue Demons answered by stealing their win over sophomore Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and freshman Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) on court 2 (6-3).
With the doubles point resting on the shoulders of sophomore duo Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Derya Turhan (Bad Something, Germany), they pulled through with a 6-4 win.
The Herd carried the winning momentum to dominate singles play.
Turhan made it look easy with a swift 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot. Silver quickly followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court 2.
Pomyatinskaya followed close behind with another straight set win on court 3 (6-3, 7-5), securing the overall win for the Herd. She is now 15-5 in singles this season.
DePaul chalked up two W's by defeating Bogicevic (6-0, 6-1) on court 5, and snagging a grueling three-setter from Broomfield (3-6, 6-4, 10-7) on court 4.
Morales was also able to come through with a straight set win on court 6 to improve the score to 5-2.
Next, the Herd takes on No. 52 William and Mary Sunday, April 5 at noon. With promises of good weather, the match will be played outdoors at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center on campus.
