WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Marshall women's soccer (0-1-0) opened its 2015 regular season with a 1-0 loss at Monmouth (1-0-0) on Friday evening at Hesse Field.

The match marked each of the teams' lid-lifters, while the MAAC preseason favorite Hawks earned their first win. Friday was the first meeting between the two programs.

The Herd found itself with an early disadvantage as Rachael Ivanicki scored on a header in the 10th minute, assisted by Julie Spracklin. Marshall ended the first half down on the scoreboard, 1-0, as well as on the shot chart, 9-4.

Preseason All-Conference USA selection Kelly Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) opened the second stanza with two shots on goal, hoping to find an equalizer. Freshman Ashley Seltzer (Knoxville, Tenn.) and senior Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) each placed shots as well. As a team, Marshall outshot Monmouth 7-2 in the second half but ultimately could not find the net, falling 1-0.

Lizzie Kish
(Boyertown, Pa.) spent all 90 minutes in goal for the Herd, making four saves. Marshall led the shot chart (12-11) but Monmouth had the advantage in corner kicks (8-6) and saves (7-5).

LONG STORY SHORT

Quotes by Coach Kevin Long:
On the result: "Monmouth - they we well organized and crafty. They're a MAAC power and it showed tonight. It was a great first team for us as far as challenging competition. I just wish we could have had the result. The game didn't go our way in the beginning, with the goal in the first 10 minutes, and we had to chase the game the whole way. We had some really good chances offensively, and we ended up gaining control; we just couldn't finish. That's going to be the challenge for this team."
