IRVING, Texas - Marshall women's soccer (6-1-1) claimed its third consecutive Conference USA weekly honor as senior defender Jenna Dubs (Green Lane, Pa.) was named Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Dubs' stout defensive play this weekend helped the Herd tie a program record of seven straight matches without a loss. She played all 200 minutes in the Marshall backfield, extending her streak of consecutive starts to 66 - every match of her career.
Dubs, the Herd's primary corner kick specialist, recorded her eighth career assist on Friday in Marshall's 2-1 win over ETSU, tying for sixth place in the Herd record book. On Sunday, Marshall held off Appalachian State in a scoreless draw, picking up its third shutout of the season.
"Dubs is off to a great start this season," Herd coach Kevin Long said. "To have played in as many games as she has is a real testament to her commitment to this team's success. She came to us as a midfielder and immediately took to center back without looking back. This past weekend, she continued to demonstrate tremendous one-on-one defending along with controlling the tempo of play with good distributions. She is the voice of our back line and I am thrilled that she, along with the entire defense, is being recognized for their solid play to date."
The honor marks the first time Marshall has received three consecutive weekly awards, and it is the most the Herd has claimed in the one season. For the last two weeks, Marshall had offensive honors by Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) and Sydney Arnold (Stafford, Va.), respectively, on Sept. 8 and Aug. 31.
Dubs is one of five Herd players all-time to earn the defensive honor, and it is the first of her career. She is the first to receive the award since teammate Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) in 2013. Other winners include Lindsey Kerns (2011), Erin Blakely (2010) and Liz Orton (2007, 2009).
Up next, the Herd will take its program-record seven-match unbeaten streak back home to Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex to conclude non-conference play against James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m.
