IRVING, Texas - Junior forward Sydney Arnold (Stafford, Va.) became the first Marshall women's soccer player to earn a C-USA weekly honor twice in the same season as she was named Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Arnold's goal in the 15th minute against James Madison proved to be the difference for the Herd in a 1-0 shutout on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. Her team-leading sixth score and third game-winner extended Marshall's unbeaten streak to a program-record eight matches. The Herd sits atop the Conference USA standings at 7-1-1 headed into the first weekend of league play against North Texas (Sept. 25) and Rice (Sept. 27).
"What an exciting time for the program," Herd coach Kevin Long said. "This is our fourth straight week with an award like this, and I'm thrilled that Syd is being recognized. Her goal against JMU (on Sunday) was a great goal. We've said it before that she's an impact player; she's one of our hardest working players and we're so happy for her."
The award marks the fourth consecutive week with a C-USA accolade for Marshall. The honor is the second of Arnold's career, as she last earned it for the week of Aug. 31. Other Marshall winners this season include defender Jenna Dubs (Green Lane, Pa.) on Sept. 14 and M/F Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) on Sept. 8. The four awards are the most in a Herd season.
Marshall was ranked No. 69 in the opening NCAA RPI on Monday, second in Conference USA behind North Texas.
