CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Marshall tennis concluded the UVa Invite Sunday, Sept. 27 by claiming three match victories out of four played.
Competing for the Herd on Sunday was freshman Jackie Carr (Rogers, Ark.), sophomore Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia), junior Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and junior Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio).
With doubles matches wrapped on Sunday, Marshall put all its focus on finishing strong in their respective brackets.
In the 'Blue Flight' was Carr and Turhan. Carr was paired up against Cheng from Utah in the seventh place match. The freshmen looked poised and dominated play as she won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Like her teammate, Turhan also would earn a match win, but this one came in three sets. Turhan, who was matched up against Ponomareva from Miami (Ohio), dropped the first set and battled back winning the second 6-3 and the tie-breaking set, 11-9.
To finish the 'Orange Flight' for the Herd was Morales. The junior was paired up against Prabakar from Arkansas. Morales wasted no time and earned a clean sweep of her opponent, 6-0, 6-0.
Marshall's only lost on the day came in the 'White Flight' with Bogicevic in the third place match. Bogicevic fell to Petrovic, 6-4, 6-3.
"Good weekend of great competition," said Herd coach John Mercer. "It's always good to have the opportunity to compete against top 10 nationally ranked teams."
Up Next, the Herd will compete at the All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The event will take place from Saturday, Oct. 3 to Oct. 11.
