HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall swimming and diving dropped its first meet of 2016 Thursday against James Madison, losing 159-141 at Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium in Huntington.
Freshman Caroline Wanner (Stafford, Va.) led the way for the Herd individually, with three wins. Wanner won the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.70), 200 backstroke (2:02.95) and 200 IM (2:05.66). Wanner's 200 butterfly time is a lifetime-best and ranks fourth in Marshall history.
Sophomore Madi Pulfer (Ottawa, Ontario) won two events for the Herd. She won the 200 freestyle (1:52.60), along with the 500 freestyle (5:03.44).
Junior Chloe Parsemain (Fos sur Mer, France) also won two events for Marshall. Parsemain won the 100 backstroke (57.81) and the 100 butterfly (56.76).
Rounding out individual wins for Marshall, freshman Anna Lynch (Oakwood, Ohio) picked up a victory in the 1,000 freestyle (10:24.72).
Junior Megan Wolons (Williamsburg, Va.) led the way for the Herd in diving, placing third in both the 1-meter (237.80) and 3-meter (228.98) dives, respectively.
TRAMEL TALK
Marshall coach Bill Tramel on the meet:
"First, I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make this meet happen two days early. We had to scramble and many folks stepped up. Our officials, Sonia Chambers and Dallas McNab rearranged their work schedules. I want to thank Marshall softball coach Shonda Stanton's players for timing today. We had 14 Softball players show the kind of awesome athletic department, teammates and supporters they are. The players that helped today were: Ali Burdette, Summer Collins, Jordan Colliflower, Briana Daiss, Alex Dawes, Jordan Dixon, Hayden Ellis, Abigail Estrada, Caitlin Gale, Kaelynn Greene, Samantha Loose, Taylor McCord, Cheyenne Meyer, and Morgan Zerkle. Thank you Thundering Herd Softball."
"Thanks to our facilities crew, Tom Ponietowicz and Andrew Brown. Plus our meet operations crew, Victoria Mesner, Tiffany Aeling and Kaley Gregory. Also Kyle Gibson, Taylor Estes, David Hay and Sara Morris. And finally, thanks to our SWA, Beatrice Crane-Banford for guiding us through this challenge."
"It was a great meet by both teams. Marshall and JMU had many season best times for a dual meet. That competition certainly helped. "
"I thought we had some tremendous fight by a lot of our women. Caroline Wanner was unbeatable today. She was on a mission every time she dove in. Madi Pulfer was on the hunt in every event as well. Madi's only second place finish was to Caroline. Chloe (Parsemain) has made the commitment to underwater kick-outs and is showing everyone the value of extending your walls. Many others were right up against their rested and suited times from Nike Cup, which is a great sign moving into the tail end of our season. You want to be performing at your best right now."
"We still have some work to do. I thought as a team, we didn't have everyone dialed in today, which is confusing. Granted, we moved the meet, but we didn't have to travel. I try to prepare our team to expect the unexpected, and react in a successful way. We had some who were doing whatever it took. From doubling with short turnarounds to swimming off events trying to steal valuable points. They did whatever the coaches asked, without complaints, because that's what the team needed. "
"But others were not fighting. I say it's confusing to me because it was a close meet from start to finish. A meet that was decided on the last relay. I had the feeling that some either didn't realize what was going on or were unable to gather the fortitude to battle. That's what's so disappointing about this meet. Not that we lost to a great team, but that we didn't have everyone fighting together. We have to be stronger as a team, and not selfish as individuals. Only then will this team be able to accomplish what I know they are capable of doing."
