COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Marshall softball team went on the road Sunday, Oct. 9, for a doubleheader with Ohio State and Eastern Michigan from Columbus. The Herd lost the first game 6-5 in eight innings to Ohio State and then took the win 2-1 over Eastern Michigan in game two.

Ohio State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Marshall began to claw back with one run in the fourth as senior Morgan Zerkle scored from third on an infield single by junior Elicia D'Orazio. The Herd put up three more runs in the fifth to take the lead, 4-3, as juniors Madi Marshall and Jordan Colliflower and then Zerkle all crossed the plate.

The Buckeyes tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Marshall took the lead again in the top of the sixth as sophomore Abigail Estrada scored. Ohio State answered with another run to tie the game back up at 5-5. OSU got the win in the eighth inning off of a double and then an infield error.

The Herd offense recorded seven hits and four stolen bases with Zerkle, juniors Eloise Tribolet and Elicia D'Orazio, and Estrada all with one swipe each.

Freshman Kailee Williamson started the game for Marshall and pitched the first two innings. Senior Jordan Dixon entered in the third and went the rest of the way.

In game two against Eastern Michigan, the Herd recorded 11 hits and scored in the top of the seventh to grab the 2-1 win. Zerkle led off the third inning with a triple and was followed by infield singles from Tribolet and D'Orazio to load the bases. Senior Shae Braxton flew out to right that brought Zerkle in from third to score the first run.

In the seventh, Zerkle got the inning going again with a bunt single and then advanced to second with a stolen base. She moved to third on a ground out and then scored off a single to center by Braxton.

Williamson started the contest in the circle and pitched three and two-thirds innings. Sophomore Ali Burdette came in next and went one and a third innings. Dixon finished the final two innings for the Herd.

UP NEXT
Marshall will finish up the fall season with a doubleheader against Team Toronto, a traveling exhibition team, Friday Oct. 14 from Dot Hicks Field. The twin bill will begin at 1 p.m.
