WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Marshall men's soccer team lost its final non-conference match of the season, 1-0, to tenth ranked Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Demon Deacons enjoyed most of the possession in the first half. The Herd kept its cool throughout the overwhelming attacks of Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons eventually broke through the Herd defense, and was awarded a penalty kick in the 14th minute. Ian Harkes converted the penalty for his second goal of the season and a one goal lead over the Thundering Herd.
The second half was identical to the first. Wake Forest was again unable to pierce freshman Trevor Clemons and the Marshall defense. The Demon Deacons held the attack for most of the match and totaled 23 shots with seven on target. Marshall ended the match with a total of 11 shots, one on target. Seniors Tommy Trupo, Daniel Jodah and Trevor Starcher along with sophomore John Pappas all finished the game with two shots a piece.
COACH'S CORNER
Assistant Coach Thomas Olivier:
"It was a good road game for us against a veteran team. The guys battled hard for 90 minutes and we put ourselves in a good position to compete. We felt we would have three to four good looks and we sure did."
"The (penalty kick) was tough to concede early onââ'¬Â¦but that's part of the game. We worked through the adversity and managed it well I thought."
"We passed the test tonight and we have lots of good moments to take home with us and get ready for a big conference game on Saturday."
