@Herd_Tennis Continues Winning Ways at ITA Atlantic Regional

NORFOLK, Va. — The Marshall women's tennis team continued play at the ITA Atlantic Regional Saturday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Herd won seven of the eight matches it competed in.

All four singles entrants remain in the draw for the Herd. Stephanie Smith, Maddie Silver, Derya Turhan and Rachael Morales each won first round matches for Marshall. The Herd also won three of the four doubles matches it played in. Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya remain in the doubles draw for Marshall.

Turhan had the lone straight sets win for the Herd, defeating Maria Siopacha of George Washington, 6-4, 6-0. Smith defeated Kristina Titova of Hampton in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. After dropping the first set of her match against Olivia Thaler of William and Mary, Silver rallied to win her match, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6. Morales won against Jona Roka of James Madison, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. All four Herd players will play second round matches at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Turhan and Pomyatinskaya began their doubles slate by defeating Magda Aubets and Darya Berezhnaya of VCU, 8-6. They continued their success by defeating the second seed in the draw, Francesca Fusinato and Caroline Daxhelet of Virginia Tech, 8-5. Morales and Smith defeated the fourth seed in the draw, Marie Faure and Lauren Goodman of William and Mary, 8-7(5), before falling to Timea Guibe and Kimmy Herrock of James Madison, 8-6. Turhan and Pomyatinskaya will play their quarterfinal match at 9 a.m. Sunday.
