COACH'S CORNER
Quotes from head coach John Mercer
On Derya Turhan's singles quarterfinals performance
"Derya played a very determined match against the No. 3 seed from Virginia Tech and pulled out another victory to advance to the semifinals tomorrow."
On the doubles team of Derya Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya in the semifinals and finals
"In doubles, we played a flawless match against a very determined and well-coached team from Liberty but we did a great job getting the momentum and riding it to the finish. The final was just an awesome college tennis match. We got off to a great start, going up 4-0. Maryland battled back to 4-4 and actually had a set point in the first-set tiebreaker before Derya and Anna pulled it out, 8-6. In the second set, Maryland got up 4-2 before we came back to go up 5-4 before falling in the set, 7-5 and in the third set, 10-5. The momentum shifts were numerous and just showed how determined both teams were to win. Unfortunately, it came down to a couple points that we just didn't win. I'm very proud of how Derya and Anna fought throughout the tournament and how hard they fought back from adversity numerous times in the finals. They were just great representatives of what Marshall University is all about."
