HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University head men's basketball coach Dan D'Antoni officially welcomed guard Jarrod West (Clarksburg, W.Va./Notre Dame High School) as the fourth signee of the 2017 recruiting class.

West joins a class that features Iran Bennett (Raleigh, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy), Tanner Robinette (Honaker, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) and Darius George (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee High School).

West comes to the Herd boasting an impressive pedigree. His father, Jarrod West Sr., played point guard for West Virginia University from 1994-98 and his buzzer-beater brought the Mountaineers to the Sweet 16 of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. The 5-11, 165-pound helped lead his high school, which is coached by his father, to the Class A state tournament last season.

"Jarrod West is a West Virginia kid," D'Antoni said. "He's been to state championships with his team and his dad is a coach. His dad is an old West Virginia player who made a shot that brought them to the Sweet 16. We hope his son can do that here for Marshall. He's a good leader on the floor and one of the state's top talents.

West has been selected to the Class A all-state first team in each of the two last seasons. As a junior, he averaged 25 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals for his high school.

"Jarrod West is the best son a dad can ask for," said West Sr. "He's a born leader, a high-character kid, a winner and he loves God. He's going to be a winner and a successful person, because of his hard work, leadership, skills and his character.

"As a player he is better than I was. He's a bulldog on defense and he loves to compete. He can shoot a 3-pointer with range and he has very good ball skills. His best asset is his leadership and his will to compete and win. I think he fits coach D'Antoni's system because of the spacing of the floor and his ability to get to the basket, as well as shoot the ball. His desire to play defense will also benefit, because everybody knows Marshall can score. He brings a defensive mentality to the position."
