HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall sunk 18 threes, one shy of the program record, in a 109-91 win at UTSA on Feb. 6 at the Convocation Center in San Antonio. For the second consecutive game, the Herd reached the century mark in regulation time. The last time Marshall posted 100 or more points in regulation in back-to-back games against Division-I opponents was during the 1988-89 season. The Herd scored 18 or more threes for just the third time in school history, on 52.9 percent shooting from distance (18-of-34). Sophomore Jon Elmore (Charleston, W.Va.) had a career-high seven triples on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. He added two free throws for a team-high 23 points, and dished out eight assists.
A WIN WOULDââ'¬Â¦
- Give Marshall its best 12-game start to league play since going 9-3 in the 1996-97 Southern Conference under Greg White
- Mark the first time the Herd won consecutive meetings with WKU
- Be the Herd's first in Bowling Green (0-7 all-time)
- Give the Herd a winning record against the Hilltoppers under coach Dan D'Antoni (2-2 all-time)
- Give the Herd its most wins in a season (13) since going 13-19 in 2012-13, and its most Conference USA wins (9) since going 9-7 in 2011-12
- Give Marshall its fifth road win, most in a single season since going 5-8 away from Huntington in 2011-12
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS
Five points separates WKU (12-12, 4-7) from being unbeaten at home this season, at 9-2. Its only losses are to FIU (75-72) on Jan. 7 and to Middle Tennessee (66-64) on Jan. 30. The Hilltoppers posted 80+ points in their last two games, and are ranked fifth in the league with a 77.0 ppg scoring offense. WKU has the best rebounding offense and rebounding margin in C-USA, pulling down 39.4 boards per game while out-rebounding opponents by 5.4. Justin Johnson is the Hilltoppers' leading scorer and rebounder with 16.0 points and 7.8 boards per game. He is the No. 2 shooter in the league with a .619 field goal percentage.
The Herd has never won two consecutive games against the Hilltoppers, and is 0-7 when playing in Bowling Green. The series stands at 13-7 in WKU's favor, however, since 2004-05, the teams are 3-3 against each other. Marshall won the last meeting, 94-76, in Huntington (Jan. 3, 2016).
