KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Freshman Ylva Forslund (Vreta Kloster, Sweden) paced the Marshall women's golf team in the first round of the 2016 Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Spring Classic on Sunday at Osprey Point Golf Club.
Forslund posted a 3-over-par 75 for the first 18 holes, placing in the top 40 of the nation's largest collegiate tournament field of 216. As a team, Marshall finished the first day right near the middle at 21st out of 41 teams with a 22-over 310.
ON THE LEADERBOARD
Chattanooga led the 41-team field with a 5-under 283 for the first 18 round. Host College of Charleston is in second, seven strokes back at 2-over 290. The Mocs' Emily McLennan is tied for first in the individual field with Malene Krolboll Hansen of Coastal Carolina, after posting 4-under 68.
PRATS' POINTS
Quotes from head coach Tiffany Prats:
On Forslund's performance:
"Today Ylva had a solid round. She looked really loose and comfortable on the course. This is something we hope to see a lot more from her. For our first round of the spring I'm happy with her play."
On Sarfina Seretharan:
"Sarfina is finally full go after having ACL surgery last March. Se had a great front nine today and I'm confident with each round under her belt she will improve.
On the team's performance:
"As a team today I thought we played decent on the front nine but our overall focus drifted on the back nine. I'm confident we got the rust out today and will be ready to go tomorrow. This team is very young and will learn from their mistakes and work hard to get better everyday. That is what it will take tomorrow for us to make the top 20 and play Osprey Point in the final round. They have the skills, now it's time to execute."
