MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Marshall tennis earned its first Conference USA win of the season against the Charlotte 49ers, with a 5-2 victory on Friday morning at the Patriots Point Tennis Center.
The Thundering Herd improves to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in C-USA action, while Charlotte falls to 5-7, 0-1 C-USA. Marshall has won its last four matches.
During the four-match win streak, head coach John Mercer made a change in doubles that has paid off. Mercer changed the pairings around to have Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) pair up, while Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio) and Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) became a duo. Since the change, both tandems are 4-0 in their matches. Pomyatinskaya and Turhan won 6-2 against the 49ers in the No. 1 spot. Morales and Silver followed suit with a 6-2 win in the No. 2 flight match. The duo of Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway) fell in their match, 7-5.
The Herd took quick control of the match in singles action by earning the first three points available. Pomyatinskaya collected the first point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Macy Vonderschmidt. Turhan followed up with another straight set victory, 6-3, 6-2 over Victory Pahlett. Marshall clinched the match win in the No. 4 spot with a Silver win over Tyler Baker, 6-2, 6-2.
Charlotte bounced back to take two points in the No. 2 and No. 6 spots, but Marshall recovered in the fifth flight match with a Bogicevic win, 6-2, 4-6, 14-12.
