HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall guards Jon Elmore (Charleston, W.Va.) and Austin Loop (South Webster, Ohio) were named to the 2015-16 Conference USA Men's Basketball All-Academic Team, the league announced Friday.
"These two are the leaders in what we're trying to at Marshall," Herd coach Dan D'Antoni said. "That's to be successful academically and athletically. I'm proud of them for their hard work, all around."
The award is the first of Elmore's career. Loop is the first repeat honoree for the Herd, after earning All-Academic last season. The only other winners in Marshall's 11-season history in C-USA were Johnny Thomas (2010-11) and Adam Williams (2008-09).
The C-USA All-Academic Team consists of five players, not to be limited by position. Nominees must have a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be a regular participant for their team. Candidates should be a sophomore by class standing, but redshirt freshmen are eligible if they have completed enough credits.
Elmore, a sophomore, averages a team-high 34.2 minutes per game at point guard. He leads the Herd with 5.9 assists per game and scores 15.1 points per game. He has three 10-assist games with two double-doubles. Marshall is 13-9 since he joined the lineup in mid-December.
Loop, a junior, is the team's leading 3-point shooter with 2.5 made per game. He ranks No. 4 in Conference USA with 74 triples this season. He has started the last 62 games for the Herd, averaging 26.2 minutes per game for his career. He ranks eighth in Marshall history with 169 career baskets from 3-point range.
