DAYTON, Ohio - Marshall (20-17) softball dropped both games at Wright State Wednesday evening, 13-5 in game one and 5-2 in game two.
Game 1: Wright State 13, Marshall 5 - 5 innings
Wright State (20-15) got the scoring started early and often in game one. The Raiders scored in each of the five innings on the way to the run-rule victory.
Junior Jordan Dixon (Edmond, Okla.) got the start in game one and was relieved by senior Brittanie Fowler (Avon, Ohio) in the third. Fowler pitched one inning before freshman Ali Burdette (Buffalo, W.Va.) came into the game.
Offensively the Herd struggled through the first three innings recording five hits with no runners crossing the plate. Marshall registered seven more hits in the fourth and fifth innings to finally score five runs.
In the fourth sophomore Jordan Colliflower (Huntington, W.Va.) started a two out rally with a single into left field. Freshman Samantha Loose (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) followed up with another single to left. With two runners on, senior Kaelynn Greene (Eastvale, Calif.) hit one up the middle that scored Colliflower and put Marshall on the scoreboard. Next, sophomore Elicia D'Orazio (Clermont, Fla.) singled through the right side scoring both Loose and Greene. Marshall cut the deficit to two, 5-3.
The Herd had to answer back in the fifth after Wright State put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the lead out to six, 9-3. In the fifth sophomore Taylor McCord (Gilbert, Ariz.) led off with a double to center. Freshman Abigail Estrada (Torrance, Calif.) was sent in to run at second for McCord and then crossed the plate after fellow freshman Briana Daiss (Clermont, Fla.) homered to left. It was the eighth home run of the season for Daiss and Marshall cut the deficit down to four, 9-5.
The Raiders scored four more in the bottom of the fifth to grab the run-rule victory.
Game 2: Wright State 5, Marshall 2
The Raiders came out firing again in game two taking a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Freshman Ali Burdette started in the circle for the Herd and was pulled after the first three runs crossed the plate. Junior Jordan Dixon came in and went the rest of the way allowing just one more run and scattering five hits.
In the third inning, Dixon recorded her third strikeout of the game and moved ahead of Andi Williamson (2011-2013) to become Marshall's all-time career leader with 732. Williamson set the record of 731 in the final game of the 2013 season against Virginia Tech in the NCAA Regional tournament in Lexington, Ky.
Dixon continued to pitch well the rest of the game and ended with eight strikeouts, but the early lead was too much for the Herd to overcome.
Marshall scored its only runs in the second inning from a two-out rally once again. Senior Alyssa Woodrum (West Hamlin, W.Va.) stood at first after reaching on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Jordan Colliflower pushed Woodrum to second with a single through the 5-6 hole. Both Woodrum and Colliflower moved into scoring position from an illegal pitch called on Ally Russell. Next, freshman Samantha Loose singled through the left side scoring both runners.
The Herd recorded only four more hits over the final five innings.
Marshall heads back to Dot Hicks Field for a weekend Conference USA series with the Charlotte 49ers April 9-10. The doubleheader Saturday is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. eastern.
