HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's soccer will host two camps at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex over the summer months, coach Kevin Long announced Thursday.
"Soccer camps over the years have been a large part of my development as both a player and as a coach," Long said. "I love the idea that we can spread the game of soccer and build enthusiasm for the sport through our camps each year."
First is the Early Identification Day Camp on Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The camp is designed to provide youth soccer players a real taste of the level required to play college soccer. Each session is specifically designed to help players learn how to enhance their techniques and improve their skills. Players will be put into a training environment similar to a college setting, with the ultimate goal of pushing players to their maximum playing ability. The session is open to girls grades 8-10 and costs $150 per camper.
On July 30-31, the men's and women's soccer programs will combine their expertise for the Goalkeeper-Striker Camp, which puts players in game situations to hone the techniques of both goalkeepers and goal scorers. For five sessions, goalkeepers and strikers will be trained and put into games maximizing the best parts of the game: shooting, scoring and saving. This camp is for players ages 10-18. The cost is $150 per camper, or $50 for only the Sunday session.
"Right now, our camps serve a couple of different purposes and coupled with the technique and tactics of the game, the camps we offer give us a chance to see players and get to know players whom we wouldn't normally see in the stands, or even out recruiting," Long said. "There are many different camps catering to players of all levels and we love bringing players and families, from West Virginia and beyond, to our fantastic facility to work with our caring and energetic staff. We welcome you to come join us for what can only be described as a very positive and comprehensive soccer experience."
