IRVING, Texas - Marshall softball junior Morgan Zerkle (Milton, W.Va.) was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team the conference office announced Tuesday. It was the second time that Zerkle has been honored as All-Academic being named in 2015.
The team consists of 12 members and is voted on by the member institutions' sports information directors. Players from 10 different schools were honored on this year's squad.
"C-USA Softball has a tremendous group of student athletes," Herd Coach Shonda Stanton said. "The 12 named to this team are quality examples of the type of commitment in the classroom and on the field they represent.
"It is great to have Zerkle add to her list of accomplishments."
Zerkle, who is a Clinical Exercise Physiology major, has a 3.68 cumulative GPA while being a star on the field for the Herd. She was named to the ASA/USA Women's National Elite Team for 2016. Despite missing 22 games due to injury in 2016, Zerkle has been a major impact player once again for Marshall.
Going into this week's Conference Tournament, Zerkle is third on the team with 52 hits and 27 stolen bases. She is hitting .491 and has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Since coming back from injury the junior has recorded a hit in 11 of the 12 games and was 4-for-4 in the regular season finale at WKU. At home against FIU she became the fastest player in Herd history to record 200 career hits in just her 137th game played.
Zerkle has been honored eight previous times with academic honors in her short three seasons for the Green and White.
Next up for the Herd is a first round game with the UTSA Roadrunners in the Conference Tournament Wednesday at 1 p.m. eastern from Denton, Texas.
