WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue defender Mikayla Lasky answered an equalizing Marshall goal by forward Jordan Sackaris in the second half to give the host Boilermakers a 2-1 victory over the Thundering Herd Friday evening at Folk Field.
The two teams were scoreless in the first half of play with Marshall controlling the latter stages, culminating with a 7-4 edge in shots. The Thundering Herd nearly scored in the 41st minute after Purdue was called for a handball in the 18-yard box. However, midfielder Julianna Smith's penalty kick was saved by Boilermaker goalie Jordan Ginther.
The home team struck quickly in the second half as forward Andrea Petrina scored 57 seconds into the period off a Hannah Leinert assist when the initial shot got deflected.
Marshall tied the game nearly 13 minutes later when Sackaris took a feed from Sydney Arnold and scored a diagonal shoot from the right side or the 18 into the left side of the net.
However, that momentum was quickly thwarted as Lasky headed in a cross from Petrina just 55 seconds later for the game-winner.
Purdue finished the contest with a 15-10 edge in shots, while Arnold led the Thundering Herd with four shots. Marshall goalie Emily Moreland made four saves to Ginther's three.
The Thundering Herd will be back in action Sunday at 2 p.m. when it travels to Michigan.
