HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -The Marshall men's soccer team continued its 2016 campaign Sunday afternoon with a win against the Detroit Titans (0-1-1) at the Hoops Family Field, 3-1. Marshall improves to 1-1.

"We wanted to be more disciplined coming into today's game," assistant coach Thomas Olivier said. "So we moved some players around based on what we knew about Detroit. Detroit is a good team and they are tough to break down. We were fortunate to create some opportunities and were able to take advantage of our chances."

Junior Nate Himes (Tampa, Fla.) got the start in goal for the second straight game for the Herd. The Thundering Herd and the Titans played to a scoreless tie in the first half. The majority of the offensive opportunities came from Marshall in the first half as it totaled six shots. The Titans had two shots in the first half.

The first goal of the game was scored by senior forward Trevor Starcher (Hurricane, W. Va.) in the 60th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The second goal was finished just three minutes later by freshman midfielder Paul Whitener (Kansas City, Mo.) in the 63rd minute to double the Herd's lead, the goal was assisted by Starcher. In the 84th minute the Titans finished its first goal of the season off a broken play in the box to bring the Titans within one goal of the Herd. Senior Daniel Jodah (Mississauga, Ontario.) went on to tap in a third goal for the Herd in the 90th minute, the goal was assisted by Whitener for his second of the game.

Next, Marshall prepares for a two game road swing with first Bowling Green (Sept. 2) and then Eastern Illinois (Sept. 4).

"Bowling Green is a very good team coming off of a solid season last year so they will be a challenge," coach Olivier said. "Eastern Illinois is an up and coming team, so we have our work cut out for us next week."

Kickoff for Bowling Green is scheduled for 7 p.m. and then a 4 p.m. eastern time kickoff at Eastern Illinois.
