HUNTINGTON, W.Va - The Marshall women's soccer team (1-2-1) fought to a hard earned 2-2 draw on Friday as they took on IUPUI (3-1-1) at the Hoops Family Field.
Despite Marshall dominating most of the possession play in the first half, the Herd found itself down 0-2 after 16 minutes of play after two counter attacks by IUPUI were both capped off by goals.
Sophomore Jayne Lawman (Winfield, W. Va) scored her first goal of the season in the 34th minute to bring the Herd back to within one goal. Shortly after, Senior Sydney Arnold (Stafford, Va.) finished the game tying goal in the 39th minute, the goal was assisted by Sophomore Ashley Seltzer (Knoxville, Tenn.)
"I thought the game started slow." head coach Kevin Long said, "We gave up a couple of early goals and that was disappointing. I thought we dominated the play and our possession was through the roof. The resiliency to come back and earn the tie was fantastic.
"There is something about the Herd fans that is unlike any other place that we play. We had a great crowd tonight and I hope to see this more, but we have to put together the results to attract great crowds."
Marshall lead in shots with seven, shots on goal with five, and corner kicks with three. Arnold and Sophomore Mack Moore (West Chester, PA.) both lead the team in shots with two each.
"ETSU is another team that we beat last year, so we will have a target on our backs." Coach Long said The game was a tale of two halves last year where we played really well in the first 45 minutes and hung on to win, so it will be a close one."
The Marshall women's soccer team continue their 2016 campaign with a home game this Sunday against ETSU at 4 pm.
