CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Marshall men's soccer team (2-2-0) picked up its second win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating the Eastern Illinois Panthers (1-2-1), 1-0, at Lakeside Field.
Freshman Carlos Diaz-Salcedo (Barcelona, Spain) scored the lone goal of the match for the Herd in the 51st minute. Goalkeeper Trevor Clemens (Lancaster, Penn.) picked up the shutout win in his first collegiate start.
The first half was a defensive struggle, with just one shot on goal between the two teams. Paul Whitener (Kansas City, Mo.) had one shot go wide 16 minutes into the match. Diaz-Salcedo had a shot stopped by EIU goalkeeper Mike Novotny in the 40th minute.
The Herd broke through early in the second half, as Diaz-Salcedo scored off of his own miss just six minutes into the half. The Herd controlled the second half, outshooting Eastern Illinois 6-1 and putting five shots on target. Eastern Illinois had its best chance in the 90th minute, but Clemens stopped Trevor Kerns' shot to preserve the win for the Herd.

"It was a tough game for us all around. EIU presented some real challenges for us and it took us a while to adjust. In the end we got some great minutes off the bench and Carlos (Diaz-Salcedo) was a real spark for us in a key stretch of the second half when we increased the tempo of the game. And congrats to Trevor (Clemens) who did a great job in his first college start and shutout."
"We still need to manage certain situations better and learn to put games away, but it's still early and the guys did well responding from Friday's disappointment by defending much better today. We again take some positive lessons from the game into a nice week at home and a tough Appalachian State squad next weekend.
