Five Members of @Herd_Tennis Earn Preseason ITA Rankings

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's tennis starts the 2017 season with five student-athletes earning recognition by appearing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Women's Tennis Preseason Rankings.
Senior Derya Turhan headlines the Thundering Herd ranked No. 90 nationally and No. 1 in the Atlantic Region in singles. The Bad Salzuflen, Germany, native held a 12-3 record in the fall with a top flight win at the CofC Tournament and was an ITA Atlantic Regional singles finalist. Turhan is the reigning Conference USA Player of the Year and was named C-USA Tennis Athlete of the Month in December.
Junior Maddie Silver ranks No. 94 nationally and No. 9 in the Atlantic Region in singles. Silver held a 9-4 record in the fall. The East Grand Rapids, Mich., native had an impressive 2016 ITA Division I Women's Atlantic Regional Championship performance by boasting a 4-1 record. Silver had wins over Virginia Tech, College of William and Mary, Old Dominion and Pittsburgh.
Marshall features two doubles teams ranked in the top 5 of the Atlantic Region. The duo of Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya rank No. 2, while the team of Stephanie Smith and Rachael Morales rank No. 5.

Marshall begins its 2017 season on Sunday, Jan. 15, by hosting Eastern Michigan at the Huntington Tennis Club at 11 a.m.
