IRVING, Texas - Marshall men's soccer senior goalkeeper Nate Himes was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is the first weekly honor for Himes.
The Tampa, Fla., native recorded five saves in the Herd's 1-0 shutout win over No. 21 Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 14. Himes made his first start since exiting the match at Northern Kentucky (Sept. 20) with an injury. The senior produced two major stops in the final minutes to help save the win for Marshall.
With just under 90 seconds to play, Himes made a diving save on a shot attempt and then clawed back to knock the ball away from the goal line as it landed with backspin. Seconds later, Himes stonewalled another shot attempt from close range before a Marshall defender could finally send the ball back downfield.
It was the Herd's first win over Kentucky since 2011 and ended Marshall's four-match winless streak.
It was the second shutout of the season for Himes. The senior keeper sports a .818 save percentage that leads C-USA, and a 0.65 goals against average. He has recorded 18 saves and has allowed four goals in over 557 minutes of action. Himes is 5-1 this season.
The Thundering Herd will be back in action Tuesday (Oct. 17) evening at 6 p.m., at Liberty.
