HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Marshall swimming and diving begins competition in the 2017 Conference USA Championships Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta. The events run from Wednesday night to Saturday night.
Marshall faces off against five other Conference USA women's swimming programs-FIU, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Old Dominion and Rice. Preliminaries begin at 10:30 a.m. each morning and finals begin at 6 p.m. each night.
The Herd comes into the championship with an undefeated regular season record at home. In addition, Marshall defeated three Power 5 schools this season--Miami (Fla.), West Virginia and Vanderbilt--two of which were on the road. The Herd is coming off four straight wins heading into the championship.
Marshall developed a habit of setting pool records at Fredrick A. Fitch Natatorium this season. The Thundering Herd set a school record for points in a single meet in its first ever win against WVU during the West Virginia Games in October. Later in the season, Marshall posted three school records against Vanderbilt, then two more in the subsequent meet against Ohio.
Freshman Jordyn O'Dell set a pool record in the 200 backstroke in her previous meet against Ohio, earning her Conference USA Swimmer of the Week honors. Sirena Rowe, Catherine Bendziewicz, Chloe Parsemain, Gloriya Mavrova and Lauren Cowher are coming off of record-setting performances against the Bobcats, as well.
Senior Diver Megan Wolons continued her stellar performance and qualified for NCAA Zone A Championships in the one meter dive. She will compete in early March in Christiansburg, Va. Wolons also won Conference USA Diver of the Week twice this year, giving her five total weekly honors in her career.
