HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall men's basketball senior guard Austin Loop was named to the 2016 Academic All-District II team, the College Sports Information Directors of America [CoSIDA] announced Thursday. The teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.
It is the first such honor for Loop. He is the first Herd player to earn CoSIDA academic recognition since J.R. VanHoose (1998-02) was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2002.
"We are thrilled that Austin has been selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II team," head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "Austin has done a great job exemplifying what it means to be a student-athlete, both in the classroom and on the court. This award is proof of that the hard work he puts into everything."
Loop is Marshall's first repeat member of the Conference USA All-Academic Team. He is a double-major in biomechanics and exercise science, owns a 3.69 GPA and is a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. His capstone project analyzes free throw mechanics and sees if exhaustion plays into a lower free throw percentage.
On the court, the South Webster, Ohio native is the Herd's all-time 3-point record holder, with 262 made in his career. Those 262 made threes have him tied at No. 7 for C-USA's made 3-pointers. This season, Loop leads the league with 81 made 3-pointers (No. 12 in the nation), is No. 9 in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (46.3), is No. 13 in nation in 3-pointers made per game (3.38) and is 10 points away from scoring 1,000 career points.
Loop is the lone men's basketball player in C-USA to be named on a CoSIDA Academic All-District team this season.
Marshall returns to action this week and will take on the WKU Hilltoppers on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. ETââ'¬â€¹.
