Herd Track and Field to Compete in Two Weekend Meets

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall University track and field team will have a split squad at two separate meets this weekend. Roughly half the team will travel to Gainesville, Florida for the Pepsi Florida Relays. Meanwhile the other half will head to Athens, Ohio for the Ohio University Cherry Blossom Invitational.
PEPSI FLORIDA RELAYS PREVIEW
The Pepsi Florida Relays began on Thursday at 2 p.m. and run three full days through Saturday night. Portions of Friday and Saturday will be streamed live via SEC Network+ and Watch ESPN. The Herd will compete in the Pepsi Florida Relays for the second consecutive year. Last season, the Herd had three top-20 finishes, all of which were from returning athletes. Sophomore Elena Marchand in the shot put (ninth), sophomore Heidi Heiniger in the javelin (14th), and senior Antonique Butler in the triple jump (16th) recorded the three top-20 finishes.
The meet will feature 10 nationally ranked schools; Oregon (1), Kentucky (2), Florida (6), Florida State (10), Tennessee (11), Alabama (15), Miami (Fla.) (16), Virginia Tech (20), South Carolina (22), and Ole Miss (23).
The first scheduled competitors for Marshall are seniors Hope Julmiste and Kametra Byrd in the 100 meter dash on Friday afternoon. They are in section eight of nine, with section one beginning at 12:35 p.m. ET.
CHERRY BLOSSOM INVITATIONAL PREVIEW
The other half of the team will make the much smaller trip to Athens, Ohio for the Ohio University Cherry Blossom Invitational. Alongside Marshall, schools competing include Ohio University, University of Charleston, and Rio Grande University.
The one day meet begins Saturday at 11:30 a.m. ET with the women's shot put. Sophomore Whitney McAtee and freshman Ericka Budd are scheduled to compete in the shot put.
Running events begin at 2 p.m. with the 3000 meter women's steeplechase. The first running event with Marshall athletes scheduled to compete is the 1500m run at 2:30. Scheduled competitors include freshmen Audreana Lewis, Abigail Short, and Mary Kerby. Juniors Samantha Graffius, Victoria Dent, and Jane Jensen, as well as senior Amber Govey are also scheduled for the 1500m run.
Marshall athletes will be competing at the Cherry Blossom Invitational for the fourth consecutive season.
