MURRAY, Ky. - Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bonelli's (Apollo, Pa.) 12 saves were one shy of the Marshall women's soccer team's program record, as the Herd fell 2-0 at Murray State on Sunday, Aug 20, at Cutchin Field.
It was the first time a Herd goalkeeper made at least 12 saves since Lindsey Kerns did so against UAB on Oct. 2, 2011.
The Herd's best chance of the first half came when sophomore Jordan Sackaris (Smithtown, N.Y.) had a shot saved at the 19:54 mark. Both sides ended the first half in a 0-0 draw, thanks to the efforts of Bonelli, who had seven saves.
Murray State out-shot Marshall in the first half, 10-1, while it also led in shots on goal, 7-1, and corner kicks, 5-0.
Murray State's Harriet Withers scored the game-winning goal at the 51:35 mark to score her first goal of the season. Freshman Mary Lawman (Winfield, W.Va.) had the Herd's best chance during the 56th minute when her shot deflected off the post. Withers sealed the game for the Racers at the 86:07 point when she scored her second goal of the contest.
